Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) can give your team secure remote access to business applications and data, simplify desktop management and support hybrid working.

For businesses that need greater control over where information is stored and how employees access it, AVD can be an attractive option.

But it is not the right solution for everyone.

A poorly designed AVD environment can become expensive, complicated or frustrating for users. Before making the move, it is worth understanding what AVD does, where it can add value and whether it actually solves a problem for your business.

What Is Azure Virtual Desktop?

Azure Virtual Desktop allows users to access a Windows desktop or individual Windows applications remotely from a supported device.

Instead of running the desktop environment entirely on a local PC, the workload runs within Microsoft’s Azure cloud environment. Users can then access their working environment remotely, whether they are at home, in the office or working from another location.

Moving to AVD simply because you want to “move to the cloud” is not necessarily a good reason. If your existing setup is simple, reliable and easy to manage, a less complex cloud solution may deliver the same benefits without the additional overhead.

Understand the Costs Before You Start

Cost is one of the first things businesses consider when looking at AVD, but it is also one of the easiest areas to underestimate.

A virtual desktop should feel straightforward to the person using it.

Performance depends on more than the speed of the user’s internet connection. It is also affected by the applications being used, the number of people working at the same time, the Azure environment and how the virtual machines are configured.

For example, a finance team running demanding specialist software may require significantly more resources than a sales team primarily using Microsoft 365 and browser-based applications.

Application compatibility also needs to be checked before deployment.

Older desktop applications, specialist software, printers, scanners and other peripherals may require additional configuration. In some cases, a particular application may simply work better on a local device.

User profiles and file access need consideration too. Employees expect their settings, documents and everyday applications to be available when they sign in.

A virtual desktop will not necessarily feel exactly like a local PC, and different users may have very different resource requirements. Testing with representative users and applications allows the environment to be properly sized before a wider rollout.

Getting the Sizing Wrong

A virtual desktop environment needs to match the way your employees work.

A configuration that works well for five users may not perform in the same way when fifteen people are logged in simultaneously.

Different teams may also have different requirements. Some users may benefit from dedicated or persistent environments, while others may work perfectly well with a pooled setup.

Getting the sizing right from the start can have a significant impact on both performance and cost.

Assuming AVD Provides Security by Itself

Moving desktops into Azure does not automatically make everything secure.

Identity protection, access controls, patching, endpoint security, backups and user awareness remain important.

AVD can form part of a wider security strategy, but it should not be treated as the security strategy itself.

Forgetting About User Adoption

Even a technically well-designed environment can struggle if users do not understand how it works.

Employees need appropriate onboarding and support, particularly if the experience is different from what they are used to.

It should also be clear who is responsible for local devices, internet connectivity, user access and support if an application or virtual desktop stops working.

An AVD deployment needs ongoing management.

User numbers change, new applications are introduced and working patterns evolve. Azure usage and costs can also change over time.

Regular reviews of performance, access, security and cost can help make sure the environment continues to match the needs of the business.

  • How demanding are those applications?

  • How sensitive is the information involved?

  • What devices will employees connect from?

  • What level of security and control do you need?

  • How much management do you want to handle internally?

Once these questions are answered, it becomes much easier to decide whether AVD is the right solution or whether another approach would achieve the same outcome more simply.
